Before you arrive

A few things to know before your trip, so arrival is easy.

  2. Getting to Rovaniemi

By plane: Rovaniemi Airport is about 10 km north of the city centre, around 15 minutes by car. An airport bus runs to the city centre after arriving flights, and taxis wait outside the terminal. You can also pick up a rental car right at the airport.

By train or long-distance bus: Trains and long-distance buses arrive at the Rovaniemi travel centre by the railway station, about 2 km from the city centre. It is a 25-minute walk or a short taxi ride.

The authentic Finnish sauna

Temperature to max, timer on the first 3 numbers. Turn the dial to 0 when you're done.

Show stepsHide steps

How to use the sauna safely:

  1. You'll see two dials on the heater: temperature and timer.
  2. Set the temperature to max.
  3. For the timer, use only the first 3 numbers so it starts immediately. (Higher numbers are for delayed starts.)
  4. Throw water on the rocks only, with the wooden ladle. The steam that rises is called löyly.
  5. When you're done, turn the dial to 0. For safety, never dry clothes in or near the sauna!

Good to know

  • Give the sauna about 40-60 minutes to heat up before your first round.
  • Finnish style: shower first, sit on a towel, stay as long as it feels good (often 5-15 minutes), cool down, drink water and repeat. Skip the sauna after alcohol, and keep an eye on children.
  • Never cover the heater or leave anything on top of it.

Keeping warm & cool

Underfloor heating: adjust with the wall thermostats. The AC is for cooling only.

Magical attractions

Places to see on your own:

Chasing the Northern Lights

Best season: September-March (roughly 21:00-02:00).

Download the Aurora Reach app and check Windy.com for clouds. For a darker sky, walk down to the riverbank, for example the beach by Arktikum.

Heading out to see the Northern Lights? It gets seriously cold at night.

Stay safe & comfortable

Dressing for the cold

Winter temperatures can drop below -30 °C. Dress in layers and cover your head, hands and feet.

Show moreShow less

Wool or thermal base layers, a warm mid layer and a windproof outer layer work best. No proper winter gear? Rent a full Arctic outfit from our office.

Icy streets & river ice

Streets can be very slippery. Never walk on the river ice.

Show moreShow less

Shoe grips help a lot on icy pavements. When you watch the Northern Lights by the river, stay on the shore: the current keeps the ice thin even in deep winter.

In the dark season, wear a reflector when you walk outside. Finns do, and drivers will see you much earlier.

Polar night & midnight sun

Around Christmas the sun barely rises. In June and July it hardly sets.

Plan outdoor activities for the brightest hours in winter. In summer, pack a sleep mask if you are sensitive to light at night.
